A member of Congress has announced plans to introduce articles of impeachment against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
Some shit you should know before you dig in: If you’re unaware, articles of impeachment can be introduced by any member of the US House of Representatives, typically as a simple resolution or referred through a committee such as the Judiciary Committee. The House then debates and votes on the articles, and only a simple majority (more than 50%) is required to approve any article of impeachment (this step is what formally impeaches an official). The process then moves to the Senate, which conducts a “trial” and requires a two-thirds majority vote of senators present to convict. The president cannot veto impeachment or conviction, because impeachment is a constitutional power of Congress, not ordinary legislation.
What’s going on now: In a notable development, Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari is moving to introduce articles of impeachment against Pete Hegseth, centering her case on allegations of war crimes tied to US military actions in Iran. She points to reported strikes on civilian targets (including a girls’ school in Minab and critical infrastructure like desalination plants, bridges, and power facilities) as evidence, arguing that these actions constitute “repeated war crimes” and violations of international law. In a statement, she said, “Trump is escalating a devastating, illegal war, threatening massive war crimes… Pete Hegseth is complicit.”
Ansari argues that Hegseth, in his role overseeing the Pentagon, bears direct responsibility for enabling or carrying out these actions, which she says also violate the Constitution. She has stressed that “only Congress has the power to declare war, not a rogue president or his lackeys,” framing the military campaign as both unlawful and escalatory.
Beyond targeting Hegseth, Ansari is also calling for action against President Donald Trump, urging his Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment. She pointed to what she described as erratic rhetoric from Trump and warned, “The 25th Amendment exists for a reason; his Cabinet should use it. The fate of US troops, the Iranian people, and the very foundation of our global system are at stake.”
As of now, the Pentagon and White House have not commented on the congresswoman’s plans.
