Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that Mexico will decline an invitation to join the US-led Board of Peace overseeing Gaza’s ceasefire efforts.

Some shit you should know before you dig in: Back in January, President Trump established the Board of Peace as a US-led international body designed to oversee Gaza’s ceasefire, reconstruction, and long-term stabilization efforts, positioning it as an alternative to the United Nations. Chaired by Trump, the board centralizes decision-making authority under his leadership, with member states pledging billions of dollars for humanitarian aid, infrastructure rebuilding, and the deployment of stabilization and security personnel in Gaza. The board operates through member contributions while also requiring financial commitments from participating countries seeking permanent seats. Nations that have joined include Argentina, Hungary, Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, Israel and El Salvador have announced plans to join.

What’s going on now: President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed Mexico will not participate as a full member of the Board of Peace, making clear that the decision is rooted in Mexico’s longstanding recognition of Palestinian statehood.Given that we recognize Palestine as a state, it’s important that both states – Israel and Palestine – participate. It isn’t set up that way,she said during her press conference.

She added, “The participation of both states, Israel and Palestine, is important. But that is not how it is being set out in the meeting.”

Although declining full membership, Sheinbaum noted that Mexico was invited to attend in a limited capacity. “They invited us to attend as observers; if we were not going to participate, then to attend as observers. And together with the foreign minister, we decided that our ambassador to the United Nations would attend as an observer,” she said.
