Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Russia will resort to military force to achieve its goals in Ukraine if ongoing diplomatic talks with the West fail to meet his demands.

Some shit you should know before you dig in: If you’re unaware, Russia and Ukraine’s demands for ending the war are far apart and reflect fundamentally opposing goals. Russia insists that Ukraine formally recognize its control over four partially occupied regions (Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson) as well as Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. The Kremlin also demands that Ukraine abandon its NATO ambitions, agree to permanent limits on its military capabilities, and prohibit any deployment of Western troops on its territory. In contrast, Ukraine demands a full Russian withdrawal from all occupied territories, including Crimea and eastern Donbas, and seeks strong international security guarantees to prevent future aggression. Ukrainian officials are also pushing for Russia to pay reparations for war damages and be held accountable for war crimes committed during the invasion.

What’s going on now: While speaking to senior military officials at an annual Defense Ministry board meeting, Putin said Russia would prefer diplomacy but made clear it would not compromise on its core objectives. The goals of the special military operation will certainly be achieved,he said, adding that Russia would seek to address theroot causes of the conflictthrough talks, but warning thatif the opposing side and its foreign patrons refuse to engage in substantive discussions, Russia will achieve the liberation of its historical lands through military means.”

Putin also lashed out at European leaders, accusing them of blindly following the US and hoping to profit from Russia’s collapse. He labeled them as “little pigs” and “piglets,” claiming European governments had joined previous US administrations in deliberately steering the situation toward armed conflict. Putin argued that Western leaders miscalculated by believing Russia could be weakened or destroyed, and said that attempts to isolate Moscow had instead strengthened its military and resolve.

On the battlefield, Putin claimed Russian forces now hold the strategic initiative “along the entire front line,” describing the army as battle hardened and unmatched in combat experience. He warned that Russia intends to expand a so called buffer security zone near its borders and praised advances in military technology, including drones, electronic warfare systems, air defenses, and modernization of Russia’s nuclear arsenal. Defense Minister Andrei Belousov echoed this assessment, outlining plans to accelerate offensive operations into Ukrainian held territory in regions Russia claims but does not fully control.

This came shortly after a US delegation met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as part of an intensified diplomatic push by the US to end the war. Zelenskyy has signaled openness to compromise on NATO membership if credible Western security guarantees are provided, but Ukrainian officials continue to insist that sovereignty, territorial integrity, and long-term protection against future Russian aggression remain non-negotiable.
