The Pentagon is investigating a suspicious package incident at a sensitive US military base that sickened multiple people and prompted the evacuation of two buildings.

Getting into it: The package, which arrived at Joint Base Andrews on Thursday afternoon, was opened inside a building housing the Air National Guard Readiness Center. Upon opening, an unknown white powder spilled out, prompting immediate concern among personnel nearby. Seven individuals quickly reported symptoms such as headaches and were transported to the base’s medical center for evaluation. All were later released in stable condition, and no one was hospitalized. The package also included anti-Trump political propaganda.

Base officials quickly evacuated both buildings where the package was opened along with a connecting structure. A perimeter was established, and first responders, including a hazardous materials (HAZMAT) team, were dispatched to assess the threat. Initial field tests conducted by the HAZMAT team did not detect any hazardous substances, though the exact nature of the white powder remains under investigation.

The base, located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, plays a critical role in US national security, serving as the operational hub for the presidential aircraft fleet and other high-level military assets. Given its strategic importance and proximity to Washington, D.C., any potential threat is taken extremely seriously.

As of now, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations has taken over the case, and the Pentagon has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
