Russia has launched its largest drone and missile assault on Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war, hours after President Trump accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of showing no real interest in ending the conflict.

Some shit you should know before you read: Over the last month, President Trump’s comments related to Russian President Vladimir Putin have taken a turn. During a Cabinet meeting yesterday, Trump expressed growing frustration with Putin, stating, “We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin, if you want to know the truth. He’s very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless.” He described a recent phone call with the Russian leader as “disappointing,” adding that he was “not happy” with Putin. In a notable reversal, Trump announced that the US would resume sending defensive weapons to Ukraine, including Patriot missile systems, to help counter intensifying Russian attacks. He is also reviewing a sanctions bill introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham that would impose 500% tariffs on countries that continue to buy Russian oil, gas, and uranium (an economic measure aimed at choking off funding for Moscow’s war machine).

What’s going on now: Russia launched 728 drones and 13 missiles in an overnight attack on Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s Air Force, the barrage included over 300 Shahed drones, along with Iskander-K and Kinzhal missiles, and targeted at least 10 different regions across the country. While Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept and destroy 718 of the drones, some still broke through, causing destruction and casualties.

One civilian was killed in the western Khmelnytskyi region when debris from a downed drone struck a residential area, and several others were injured, including a woman in Brovary near Kyiv. Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed the strikes were aimed at military air bases and said that the attacks were successful.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as a blatant rejection of diplomatic efforts to end the war. In a message on Telegram, he wrote, “This is a demonstrative attack, and it comes at a time when there have been so many attempts to achieve peace and ceasefire, but Russia rejects everything.” He also called for tougher sanctions, particularly targeting Russian oil exports. “This is yet another proof of the need for sanctions β€” biting sanctions against oil, which has been fueling Moscow’s war machine with money for over three years of the war. Everyone who wants peace must act. Our partners know how to apply pressure in a way that will force Russia to think about ending the war, not launching new strikes.”
