Elon Musk has once again come out against President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” as lawmakers on Capitol Hill prepare to advance the massive spending package.

Some shit you should know before you read: If you’re unaware, the “Big Beautiful Bill” is currently making its way through the Senate. The bill, estimated to add roughly $5 trillion to the national debt, is designed to enact key elements of Trump’s domestic agenda but has drawn fierce criticism for its lack of fiscal restraint. Notably, the bill does not account for potential revenue that could be generated through Trump’s tariffs and business expansion initiatives, which Republicans claim will soften its budgetary impact. Despite this, the bill includes massive subsidies for traditional energy sectors, such as coal and gas, while cutting electric vehicle tax credits. It also includes reductions in federal Medicaid funding, the largest defense budget in US history, reshuffles infrastructure spending toward fossil fuel development, and expands tax breaks for legacy manufacturing industries.

What’s going on now: Amid some fractures within the Republican Party over President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” Elon Musk has once again come out against the bill. On the day the Senate advanced the legislation, Musk criticized the proposal, calling it “utterly insane and destructive.” He warned that the bill would cripple forward-looking industries while propping up outdated ones. He wrote, “The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country! Utterly insane and destructive. It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future.” Musk, who has a history of clashing with lawmakers over federal spending priorities, has repeatedly criticized the bill’s sheer size and said it represents a reckless misuse of public funds.

Much of Musk’s outrage is also believed to be tied to the bill’s direct impact on his businesses. The legislation eliminates federal tax credits for electric vehicle purchases (an incentive that has long benefited Tesla) and introduces new taxes on renewable energy projects, including solar, battery storage, and wind. Tesla, which manufactures and installs both electric vehicles and clean energy systems, could see significant financial setbacks under the bill’s provisions. Some argue that Musk’s opposition is partly due to his interests, although Musk has openly stated that it has nothing to do with that.

This all comes as the relationship between Musk and Trump has been rocky to say the least. Despite this, during an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” with Maria Bartiromo, Trump said, “I think he’s a wonderful guy. I haven’t spoken to him much, but I think Elon is a wonderful guy, and I know he’s going to do well always. He’s a smart guy.” When pressed about Musk’s recent criticism, Trump added, “He got a little bit upset, and that wasn’t appropriate.” He went on to acknowledge the likely root of Musk’s frustration: “Look, the electric vehicle mandate, the EV mandate, is a tough thing for him. I would, you know, I don’t want everybody to have to have an electric car.”
