President Trump has vowed to hold Iran responsible for any attacks carried out by the Houthis, warning of “dire consequences” as the US launched airstrikes targeting the Iran-backed group in Yemen.

Some shit you should know before you read: If you’re unaware, over the weekend, the United States carried out at least three rounds of strikes targeting a wide range of Houthi military assets in Yemen, including missile sites, radar systems, drone launchers, and air defense installations. The strikes, which began on Saturday, were ordered by President Trump in response to repeated Houthi attacks on US and allied vessels in the Red Sea. According to the Yemeni Health Ministry, at least 53 people were killed and roughly 100 were injured in the attacks. Trump stated that the US was targeting the Houthis to protect American interests, restore freedom of navigation, and deter further aggression. The Houthis, however, claimed they were attacking Western-linked ships in protest of Israel’s war in Gaza and vowed to continue their operations until an aid blockade on Gaza was lifted.

What’s going on now: In an announcement on Monday, President Trump issued a direct warning to Iran, saying that any attack by the Houthis would be considered an attack by Iran itself and met with severe consequences. He said, “Every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon, from this point forward, as being a shot fired from the weapons and leadership of IRAN, and IRAN will be held responsible, and suffer the consequences, and those consequences will be dire!”

Trump accused Iran of controlling the Houthis’ every move, saying, “They’re dictating every move, giving them the weapons, supplying them with money and highly sophisticated military equipment, and even so-called ‘Intelligence.'”

Iran responded with a threat of its own, as General Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, vowed retaliation if the US continued its aggression. “We warn our enemies that Iran will respond decisively and destructively if they carry out their threats,” Salami said in a statement to state media. He dismissed Trump’s accusations, claiming that Iran does not hide its military actions and would make them known if it chose to strike.

This comes as the Houthis remain one of Iran’s last significant proxy forces in the Middle East following major setbacks for other Iranian allies. Over the past year, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza have suffered heavy losses due to Israeli military operations, significantly weakening their capabilities. Additionally, Syria—once Iran’s closest ally in the region—saw its leader flee the country after he was overthrown.
