According to the Pentagon, Russia has had more than 600,000 in its ongoing war with Ukraine.
What’s the deal: The Pentagon’s latest assessment, a notable increase from its previous estimate of 300,000, includes both those killed and wounded in the war. A Pentagon official added, ‘Russian losses, both killed and wounded in action, during just the first year of the war exceeded the total of all Soviet losses in any conflict since World War II combined.’

Along with significant casualties, Russia has lost more than two-thirds of its pre-war tank inventory. It has also lost 32 medium-to-large naval vessels in the Black Sea, primarily due to Ukrainian drone attacks.
Ukrainian casualties: While exact figures for Ukrainian casualties have not been fully disclosed, and US officials have not commented on Ukraine’s losses, it is clear that Ukraine has also suffered significant losses during the war. In February 2023, President Zelensky claimed that approximately 31,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed, though this figure was considered inaccurate. Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal reported that around 80,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed, with over 400,000 injured. Zelensky disputed the claim, saying, ‘80,000? That is a lie. The actual figure is much lower than what has been published—significantly so.’

Ukraine’s estimate on Russian casualties: According to the Ukrainian defense ministry, they estimate that 664,120 Russians have been ‘eliminated,’ though this figure does not distinguish between those killed and wounded. Based on the ministry’s daily reports, Russia sustained 8,560 casualties in the past week, averaging 1,222 per day.
