Shein has filed a lawsuit against Temu, accusing the rival fast-fashion retailer of stealing its designs.

What’s the deal: Shein’s lawsuit, filed in Washington, DC, accuses Temu of stealing its designs, promoting counterfeit goods, and misleading consumers through deceptive advertising. Shein alleges that Temu built its business by exploiting Shein’s intellectual property, including instructing sellers to copy Shein’s best-selling products and using Shein’s copyrighted images for promotion. The lawsuit also claims that Temu created fake social media accounts and ads to falsely present itself as Shein, diverting customers to its platform.

Temu responds: In a statement, a spokeswoman for Temu called the lawsuit “unbelievable.” She added, “SHEIN, buried under its own mountain of IP lawsuits, has the nerve to fabricate accusations against others for the very misconduct they’re repeatedly sued for.”

Previous beef: This isn’t the first lawsuit between Shein and Temu, as their rivalry has led to both companies accusing each other of unethical practices. Temu previously sued Shein, claiming that Shein used “mafia-style intimidation” to pressure suppliers into exclusive agreements, blocking them from working with Temu. Meanwhile, Shein has accused Temu of stealing trade secrets, including details about Shein’s best-selling products and internal pricing, to produce knock-off versions of Shein’s designs.
