According to multiple US intelligence officials speaking anonymously to CNN, recent intelligence obtained from a human source revealed an Iranian plot to assassinate Donald Trump.
This plot prompted the Secret Service to enhance security measures around the former president. Despite the increased security, there is no evidence linking the shooter who attempted to assassinate Trump on Saturday to the Iranian plot.
A US national security official speaking to CNN confirmed that both the Secret Service and the Trump campaign were alerted to the Iranian plot before the rally. The official was quoted saying, “Secret Service learned of the increased threat from this threat stream. NSC directly contacted USSS at a senior level to be absolutely sure they continued to track the latest reporting. USSS shared this information with the detail lead, and the Trump campaign was made aware of an evolving threat. In response to the increased threat, Secret Service surged resources and assets for the protection of former President Trump. All of this was in advance of Saturday.”

In August 2022, the Justice Department charged a member of the IRGC with plotting to assassinate John Bolton in retaliation for Soleimani’s death. Additionally, the Iranian government has previously released animated videos depicting the assassination of former President Trump with a drone, accompanied by messages suggesting that “revenge” is coming.
