Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations has dismissed Donald Trump’s claim that he could end the war between Russia and Ukraine within a day if reelected president.

When questioned about Trump’s claim, Vassily Nebenzia said, “The Ukrainian crisis cannot be solved in one day.” Nebenzia also claimed that the war might have ended in April 2022 during negotiations in Istanbul, where Russia and Ukraine were close to an agreement. However, he blamed Western nations for influencing Ukraine to continue fighting, thereby preventing a peace deal.

He also criticized Zelenskyy’s current peace plan as a “joke,” noting that significant nations and Russia did not support the plan despite a call from nearly 80 countries for Ukraine’s territorial integrity to be the foundation of any peace agreement.

This all comes after Trump, at a CNN town hall in May 2023, claimed that he could halt the conflict within 24 hours by meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Trump, he believes that the war in Ukraine would not have even happened if he had been president, alluding that Putin would fear “testing” him [Trump]. Trump said, “If we had a real president, a president that knew — that was respected by Putin … he would have never invaded Ukraine.”
