A house fire near Philadelphia on Wednesday has officials fearing the loss of six to eight lives, with two police officers also injured by gunfire from within the residence.

The incident unfolded in East Lansdowne, where police were initially called to the scene following reports of an 11-year-old girl being shot. Upon their arrival, officers were met with gunfire, resulting in injuries.

Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer reported that the fire, suspected to have been started deliberately by a shooter inside the home, prevented immediate entry for rescue efforts. Due to the intensity of the fire, search operations for victims were postponed until Thursday, with Stollsteimer expressing concern for the well-being of the household’s residents, including children, who remain unaccounted for.
