Protestors in Goma have taken to the streets over what they say is a failure by the United Nations mission (known as MONUSCO) to protect civilians against violence from militias that have killed thousands over the years.

Protestors armed with rocks and homemade petrol bombs attacked police, UN peacekeepers, and UN buildings around Goma and Butembo. In addition, protestors showed up at UN staff workers’ homes, prompting an extraction conducted by UN peacekeepers. Some protestors were also armed with weapons and killed two UN police officers and a UN soldier.

In a statement, Deputy UN spokesman Farhan Haq said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the violence and added “that any attack directed against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute a war crime and calls upon the Congolese authorities to investigate these incidents and swiftly bring those responsible to justice.”
