Russia has continued striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure after President Trump announced an “energy ceasefire” between the two countries, as oil prices climbed Monday on doubts the truce will hold.

Getting into it: Trump posted on Truth Social Sunday that “effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” Zelensky said Ukraine learned about it from the news, but would back a truce as long as Russia also complied.

Hours later, Russia struck a power plant in Kharkiv, followed overnight by a drone attack on a gas production facility run by Ukraine’s state energy company Naftogaz, which caused a fire but no injuries. Zelensky said Russia hit six Ukrainian energy facilities on Monday alone, while noting Ukraine held off on striking Russian refineries overnight.

“It is increasingly evident that Russia is unwilling to accept an energy ceasefire proposed by the United States and intends to continue its terrorist air attacks against our people and communities,” Zelensky said on X, warning that “if Russia does not agree to an energy ceasefire, we will respond.” He added, “For now, this is Putin’s answer to Trump.”

The Kremlin neither confirmed nor denied agreeing to the deal, saying only that contacts are ongoing. Trump made a nearly identical announcement in September, and strikes on both sides continued.

This all comes days after Trump struck a deal with Putin to lift sanctions on Russian diesel, a move analysts say is too small to move markets, and as EU foreign ministers prepare to approve nearly 1,600 new sanctions listings against Russia, the bloc’s largest expansion since the war began.
