Milo Yiannopoulos, a British right-leaning pundit who spent years weighing in on US politics, has been deported from the United States one day after ICE picked him up at a New Orleans airport.

Getting into it: ICE arrested him Thursday night at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Kenner, Louisiana, after he reportedly traveled there for a Kanye West concert. By Saturday morning, ICE’s public detainee lookup no longer listed him, and DHS said his flight to the UK left Friday.

In a statement, DHS said, “He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws.” The department called Yiannopoulos an “illegal alien from the United Kingdom” who entered legally on May 14, 2019. He later skipped his immigration hearing, and on July 22 a judge signed a final order of removal. DHS also said the administration is “working diligently to ensure that aliens in our country illegally can no longer fly unless it is out of our country to self-deport,” and encouraged others to leave voluntarily.

The one-day turnaround raised questions, since other detainees have sat in Louisiana detention facilities for months. Border czar Tom Homan told CNN’s Dana Bash it was standard practice. “Once a judge orders them out, rather than being in detention, waiting for travel documents and flight arrangements, we, ICE, along with CBP and the Department of Homeland Security… get them out quick, open those beds up for more detainees to be held,” he said. “He had his due process, ordered removed by a federal judge, and ICE removed him. It’s that simple.” Asked whether the administration made an example of him, Homan said, “We don’t deport people based on political affiliation.”

Despite all of this, Laura Loomer is taking credit for the whole thing. The Trump-allied influencer, who has feuded with Yiannopoulos for years, said she flagged him to both ICE and the FBI, and that the arrest was “100%” the result of her pushing the story about his visa status. “Who else reported that Milo was an illegal alien?” she said. Homan would not confirm whether Loomer was behind it, telling Bash that “a lot of people tipped ICE off. There are a lot of people who’s calling ICE, and she says she’s one of them. She probably was. But bottom line is, it doesn’t matter.”

Loomer also posted, “Milo is going to be deported back to the UK where he can live among the Muslims he has recently chosen to embrace. Today is a great day for America,” and called for deporting streamer Hasan Piker, who is a US citizen.

This comes roughly two months after Yiannopoulos posted on social media, “There is one concrete thing we must insist on this administration delivering…..We have got to deport millions and millions and millions of people. Without that, nothing else matters.” He called for “total legal immunity for ICE agents when they’re on duty,” ICE checkpoints at gas stations and intersections in California, and “on the spot deportation for anyone who can’t prove they are in the US legally.” Last year he posted, “Zero immigration for the next 20 years. No ifs, no buts.”

As of now, there’s been no comment from Yiannopoulos.
