Hunter Biden says his father’s prostate cancer has spread beyond his bones and left the former president in serious pain.
Getting into it: In an interview with the BBC, Hunter said, “The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further. It’s very painful, and it’s very debilitating in many respects. But he’s still out there.” He grew emotional describing what it has been like for the family. “The only thing that I say about my dad about his health right now is I wish he would complain more because it’s not good,” he said. “It’s really hard, and it’s really sad to watch.”
He called his father “our rock,” adding, “He has been there for each one of us in a way that is hard for me to even possibly articulate and explain.”
Joe Biden disclosed the aggressive prostate cancer diagnosis in May 2025, less than four months after leaving office, saying then that it had already reached his bones. The family said in September 2025 that he had finished radiation and hormone treatment. Jill Biden told NBC in June 2026 that “the fact that it metastasized to his bones, that makes it a whole different story,” and that “Joe will live with cancer till the rest of his life.”
Hunter also addressed the pardon his father granted him covering January 2014 through December 2024, which landed before he was sentenced in either his federal gun case or his tax case. Hunter did not defend it.
“Was it good for our Constitution? Was it good for the American people? Was it good for my dad’s legacy? No, on all counts,” he said. “It’s something that is easily criticized and for good reason, and I can’t pretend otherwise.” He added that he is grateful anyway: “I was the only one in the world that could have gotten what I got from the only person in the world who could give it, my father.”
A Biden spokesman declined to comment on the interview.
