The Treasury Department has announced new sanctions targeting multiple entities and individuals across China, India, Russia, and Iran for supporting an airline the department alleges is moving weapons and personnel on behalf of Iran.

Some shit you should know before you dig in: If you’re unaware, Iran runs a carrier called Mahan Air that markets itself as an ordinary commercial airline. The US has not treated it as one since October 2011, when Treasury designated it for bankrolling and equipping the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force. According to Treasury, the airline flies Quds Force personnel to military training and moves drone systems and weapons in and out of the country. The EU has also sanctioned the airline.

What’s going on now: In a notable development, the Treasury announced new sanctions targeting six entities and individuals for facilitating Mahan Air’s global operations. Those sanctioned included the following:

• Shanghai Wings International Logistics — China-based general sales agent for Mahan Air that has coordinated the transport of electronics from China to Iran. 
• Tang Xin — managing director of Shanghai Wings who has coordinated travel for Mahan Air. 
• Shanghai Elite International Travel — China-based agency representing Mahan Air, designated because Tang Xin is its executive director and 50 percent owner. 
• Skiez Travels and Logistics — India-based general sales agent with offices in Srinagar and Delhi that has represented Mahan Air since 2020. 
• Air Cargo Pro Limited — Russia-based general sales agent for Mahan Air. 
• DadeNegar Startup Studio — IRGC front company that ran a website soliciting the locations of American and Israeli equipment and took in strike requests against US targets in the Middle East.

In a statement, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, “Those who provide financial services, logistics, or commercial support to the IRGC or Mahan Air are helping sustain a terrorist enterprise. Treasury will continue to identify them, expose them, and cut them off from the U.S. financial system.”

This all comes days after the US sanctioned Chinese and Hong Kong-based companies that were supporting the Iranian government.
