US Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Dr. Lai Ching-te, also known as William, on his victory in Taiwan’s presidential election.
In a statement released by the State Department, Blinken praised the democratic process in Taiwan, stating, “The United States congratulates Dr. Lai Ching-te on his victory in Taiwan’s presidential election. We also congratulate the Taiwanese people for once again demonstrating the strength of their robust democratic system and electoral process.”
Blinken expressed the United States’ intention to collaborate with Dr. Lai and leaders from all Taiwanese political parties. “We look forward to working with Dr. Lai and Taiwan’s leaders of all parties to advance our shared interests and values, and to further our longstanding unofficial relationship, consistent with the US one China policy,” Blinken remarked. He also underscored his confidence in Taiwan continuing to be a beacon of freedom, democracy, and prosperity.
Lai, who previously held the position of vice president, secured his win in a high-profile election, leading to the concession of his competitors. The outcome of this election is significant as it will shape Taiwan’s relationship with China for the coming years. China, which claims the Taiwan Strait as its own, has expressed concerns over the election’s impact on regional peace and stability.
China has been vocal in its opposition to Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party, asserting sovereignty over Taiwan, which has been self-governed for nearly 75 years. Despite Lai’s openness to dialogue with China, the Chinese officials have rebuffed any talks, labeling the party members as “separatists.”
In response to his victory, Lai took to social media to express his gratitude for the public’s trust and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait and contributing positively to the global community.
