Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has demanded Congress withhold over $10 billion in military aid to Israel, asserting that it will support what he deems as the Israeli government’s “grossly disproportionate” and “immoral” warfare in Gaza.
Sanders emphasized the US’s role in the conflict, stating, “While we recognize that Hamas’ barbaric attack began this war, we must also recognize that Israel’s military response has been grossly disproportionate, immoral, and in violation of international law.” He pointed out the impact of the conflict, with reports indicating over 22,000 Palestinian casualties, most of whom are women and children, and the displacement of a significant portion of Gaza’s population.
Sanders has been vocal against the proposed aid for Israel, which is part of a larger emergency foreign aid package, arguing that it essentially provides “unconditional military aid for the right-wing Netanyahu government to continue its brutal war against the Palestinian people.”
The Vermont senator’s stance is not without its consequences within his own political circle. Last month, he stood alone in his vote against a procedural motion to advance a $110 billion emergency foreign aid package that included funds for Israel, with the rest of the Democratic caucus voting in favor.
