Chinese state media has warned the Philippines against “causing trouble and chaos” in the contentious South China Sea.
In a post by the State-controlled news outlet ‘People’s Daily,’ it read that the Philippines has “repeatedly infringed on China’s territory in the region and risked making a severe ‘miscalculation.”
The editorial particularly criticized Philippine activities near the Second Thomas Shoal, an area both Manila and Beijing claim. The People’s Daily accused the United States of spurring the Philippines’ “provocative” actions, which “irresponsibly escalate regional tensions.” The article argued, “The Philippines relies on the support of external forces, ignores China’s goodwill and restraint, and repeatedly provokes China’s principles and bottom line.” It described such behavior as “extremely dangerous” and claimed it has “seriously harmed regional peace, stability, prosperity, and development.”
This comes as tensions have been escalating over several incidents, with the most recent on December 10 when the Philippines accused China of ramming its supply boat. In response, the China Coast Guard contended that the Philippine ship had “deliberately collided” with its vessel “after disregarding our multiple stern warnings.” Amid these disputes, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently stated that any miscalculation would bring a “resolute response from China” and urged Manila to “act with caution.”
