US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to emphasize NATO’s unwavering support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia during his visit to Europe this week amidst the ongoing Gaza war, according to Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O’Brien.

O’Brien highlighted that despite the attention required by the Israel-Hamas conflict, Blinken’s trip, starting Monday in Brussels, will reinforce the US and its allies’ commitment to Ukraine, especially in the NATO-Ukraine Council’s first foreign minister-level meeting. “This is part of the process of finding a place in the alliance, which we’ve always said is Ukraine’s future,” O’Brien stated.

Additionally, Blinken will address tensions in the Western Balkans, where an increase in NATO troops is being considered amid issues in northern Kosovo. O’Brien mentioned the importance of a robust NATO-led peacekeeping force in the region for political progress.

With some bipartisan support in Congress, the Biden administration remains confident in its continued military aid to Ukraine. Currently, Congress is deliberating on further funding for Ukraine’s defense, alongside assistance to Israel and Taiwan.
