The United States has successfully foiled an assassination attempt on Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Information relating to the assassination plot’s details is under strict investigation by the FBI, as concerns arise over potential knowledge of the Indian government regarding this plot.
The official, who requested anonymity, stated, “US authorities have raised concerns with New Delhi that the Indian government may have had knowledge of the plot.” According to the official, “The FBI is investigating the matter,” although spokespeople for the FBI and the Justice Department declined to comment.
This follows Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s September revelation of possible links between the Indian government and the assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Trudeau’s disclosure led to heightened tensions, including the expulsion of an Indian diplomat from Canada.
At the time of Prime Minister Trudeau’s disclosure, National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson confirmed the seriousness with which this issue is being treated, saying, “We are treating this issue with utmost seriousness, and it has been raised by the US Government with the Indian Government, including at the senior-most levels.” She added that the Indian government expressed surprise and concern, stating, “They stated that activity of this nature was not their policy.”
