A Navy P-8 Poseidon plane from Washington State’s “Skinny Dragons” squadron overshot the runway while landing at the Marine Corps Air Station in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, ending up in the nearby waters.
Lt. Mohammad N. Issa, deputy public affairs officer for the 3rd Fleet, confirmed the incident occurred around 2 p.m. local time. All crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft, which was partaking in a mission “in support of maritime homeland defense.”
Following the mishap, first responders and emergency teams swiftly arrived at the scene. They conducted an initial evaluation and implemented a temporary floating barrier as an environmental safeguard. Lt. Issa added that a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the incident is planned.
Local media coverage depicted the aircraft floating in Kaneohe Bay, with smaller boats encircling it. The Marine Corps Base Hawaii, where the incident transpired, is located approximately 10 miles from Honolulu on the island of Oahu.
