According to Somalian officials, al-Shabab terrorists attacked a military base in the village of Qayib, an area recently captured by government forces the week prior. The terrorists started the attack with two suicide bombers driving separate vehicles that detonated at the complex at 5 AM. Seconds later, multiple al-Shabab fighters rushed the complex, and heavy fighting continued for hours. Eventually, government forces were able to repel the attack.

Locals on the ground say that 37 soldiers were killed in the attack, including three commanders. Two of the soldiers killed were found with dismembered bodies, suggesting that Al-Shabab fighters tortured them as the fighting was going on.

In a statement, al-Shabab spokesman Abdiasis Abu Musab said their fighters killed at least seven soldiers and obtained military weapons and vehicles during the raid. The terrorist’s spokesman did not confirm or deny that the group had retreated.

This development comes as Somalian forces and local militias are fighting to recapture territory from the terrorist organization. In recent months, government forces have made considerable gains, resulting in al-Shabab launching terrorist attacks around the country. One attack two weeks ago killed at least 100 people and injured over 350 in the capital of Mogadishu.
