Officials in Texas say that the driver behind a truck loaded with dozens of migrants who died in the back of a trailer in San Antonio was under the influence of methamphetamine when police apprehended him.

According to San Antonio police, officers found Homero Zamorano hiding in brush near the abandoned tractor-trailer where 53 migrants were found dead. Zamorano initially tried to downplay his involvement, presenting himself as one of the victims suffering from extreme heat exhaustion.

US Representative Henry Cuellar says Zamorano had methamphetamine in his system when he was taken into custody. A border patrol official has also corroborated this statement.

The news comes as reports have come out that the driver was “unaware” that the air conditioning unit connected to the trailer had stopped working. Zamorano is scheduled for an initial court hearing on July 6th.
