Russia’s “Victory Day” parade in Moscow was held today. The parade is meant to commemorate the Soviet Unions role in defeating Nazi Germany during World War II. Russia’s military showcased 131 pieces of military equipment (compared to 190 last year) and involved over 11,000 soldiers. Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke for approximately 20 minutes, some key takeaways include:
1. Russian President Vladimir Putin says the operation in Ukraine was to “pre-emptively repel aggression.”
2. Putin drew parallels between the meaning of the soviet mission in WWII and that of Russia’s war in Ukraine today.
3. Putin discussed recent history of Russian demands for security guarantees from NATO and western countries. Says that Russia’s “legitimate claims” were ignored by NATO and western countries which left him no option but to enter Ukraine.
4. Putin insists that western countries attitude made Russia take “the only right decision to preventively strike on Nazi-bandera forces that were plotting attacks on Russia.”
5. Putin says to Russian soldiers “You are fighting for your motherland so that there’s no place in the world for the butchers.”
