China has issued an ominous threat after Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced she will visit Taiwan on April 26th. State Council Ma Xiaoguang said the speaker’s visit to Taiwan “would be considered by Beijing as a violation of the one-China principle and related US-Chinese agreements.” In addition, Xiaoguang said, “China will deliver a harsh retaliatory blow in the event that US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan.” Xiaoguang did not elaborate further.

Speaker Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan will be the first visit from a house speaker in 25 years. She was originally scheduled to go earlier this month but canceled the trip due to COVID. There’s been no comment from the Pentagon, White House, or Speaker Pelosi’s office on the recent threat from China.
