The Department of Justice has announced that federal prosecutors have charged five individuals for spying, stalking, and targeting US citizens and residents on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party. All individuals who were targeted by the spies had pro-democracy views & were vocal about their views.
According to the government, some of the alleged schemes involved:

1)A spy who worked for China’s ministry of state security (MSS). The individual was tasked with sabotaging a congressional campaign of a US military veteran who was the leader of a 1989 pro-democracy demonstration in Beijing. The justice department will not reveal the congressional candidate’s name & is referring to him as “Victim 1.”

2) Three spies who planned to destroy the artwork of a Chinese national residing in the Los Angeles area that was critical of the Chinese government. The spies planted surveillance equipment in the artist’s workplace & car to spy on him.

3) A spy (who was under the direction & control of 7 MSS officers) was instructed to obtain a position & status within the Chinese diaspora community in New York City. From there, the individual was ordered to collect information about prominent activists and dissidents of China. All this information was to then be reported to the MSS handlers back in china through “online diaries”.

In a press conference, Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division identified the individuals as Qiming Lin, Shujun Wang, Fan “Frank” Liu, Matthew Ziburis, & Qiang “Jason” Sun. Attorney General Olsen went on to say “Transnational repression harms people in the United States and around the world and threatens the rule of law itself,” said A. “This activity is antithetical to fundamental American values, and we will not tolerate it when it violates U.S. law. The Department of Justice will defend the rights of Americans and those who come to live, work, and study in the United States. We will not allow any foreign government to impede their freedom of speech, to deny them the protection of our laws or to threaten their safety or the safety of their families.”
